Now that we're all at home, social distancing because of Corona Virus, some of us might have more spare time than usual.  Here are a few helpful suggestions on how to whittle away those extra hours without Netflix...

  • Organize your photos : Yup, you know, all those wild, unnamed, to-be-sorted pics and folders that you dumped somewhere on your computer because you didn't have the time to sort them?  Well, now you do! Use Photos app on your Mac or Google Photos to help organize them...using facial recognition, it's awesome!
  • Backup your files and documents : We all do it when we're in a rush — stash important files in a folder on our computer's hard-drive, and then just forget about them, hoping that everything will be alright... but we should really be storing a copy on a portable hard drive and a copy on the cloud.
  • Uninstall those unused apps : Unused apps can take up space and slow your computer down, so uninstall them.
  • Protect your passwords : Everyone knows that it's never a good idea to use the same password on all your accounts, but who can remember unique passwords for every account that we use?  There are password manager apps that help with that, so now could be a good time to increase your security and help ease the burden of remembering dozens of unique passwords. We like Lastpass.
  • Clean-up your inbox : Can you get down to Inbox Zero? I.E. an empty inbox! Maybe not, but now's a great time to delete those already-read emails and get rid of the clutter.
  • Do a thorough anti-virus / malware sweep : You know, that super-slow but incredibly thorough scanning mode on your anti-virus app that you used once but never ran again because you didn't have time to actually do that sort of scan?  Today's your lucky day, do a full scan and see if it finds anything.
  • Organize your notes and lists: You know all those paper notes scattered around your work area and stuck to the fridge?  Type them into your phone's notes app, use Google Keep, Evernote, etc.
  • Cut the cable-TV cord : Still using cable or satellite TV and thinking of switching to streaming, but never actually got around to trying that?  Now is a great time to give Netflix, Disney+, Crave, Apple TV, Prime a try.
  • Setup Facetime/Skype/Zoom/WhatsApp : There are a ton of great options available for video-chatting with friends and family, and if you've been shying away from trying them because you didn't have the time to fiddle with them, now is a great time to take one for a test-drive.
  • Upgrade to Windows 10 or macOS Catalina: Still hanging onto Windows 7 because you haven't had time to update to 10? Now may be a good time to get it done. Likewise updating your Mac to the latest macOS, Catalina,

So, those are just a few ideas on how to spend some time actually doing something productive.  There's only so much TV you can watch, and sometimes it really feels better to just DO something, and know you've accomplished something in the end.  :)
