3-2-1 Backup!

Making backups isn't fun, but remember — it's as easy as 3-2-1...! Or at least, that's the silly little rhyme we use to remember how simple it can be...

  1. Keep at least 3 copies of your data: one working copy, and two backups.
  2. Store your backups on at least 2 types of devices : your actual drive, then a backup drive. We call this the "private cloud" or "personal cloud".
  3. Store 1 of these copies off-site (ie. in the cloud, or public cloud.)

Taking these three simple steps can help keep your data safe! Here's a quick guide to do it yourself, for both Mac and PC.

To Backup a Mac:

  • Plug in an external drive into a USB port
  • Run Time machine, choose the drive (it will erase the drive so be careful)

When that finishes you'll have 2 copies of data, your original and your drive backup. Next, if you wish, is a Cloud backup. A quick and easy solution is to sync to iCloud.

To Backup a Windows 10 or 11 PC:

  • Plug in an external drive into a USB port
  • run "File History" and follow the prompts
  • For Cloud Backup in Windows 10, turn on file syncing in OneDrive or use Google Drive to Sync your files.
  • Advanced Tip: Optionally, partition your backup drive in 2 parts, one for Images and one for File History

As always, if you need help setting up and verifying your backup, send us an
email to help@signa.com and we'll help you keep the contents of your digital life (ie. your work, documents, photos, videos — everything!) safe from accidental loss.
